How to Choose Your Area Rug

Size

When thinking about your room and the area you want to cover, it’s best practice to choose a larger area rug. The most common area rug sizes are 4 x 6 and 6 x 9 feet, and they work well under a coffee table. An 8×11 foot rug or larger can cover an entire room, while smaller area rugs and scatter rugs are ideal for adorning tighter spaces with a splash of color and warmth.

Durability

Your rug has to fit your room – in more ways than one. Consider how the room is used, how much traffic the area receives and how it will appear under light. For high-traffic areas such as hallways and foyers, you may want a more durable, patterned rug.

Design

An area rug with a bold design can serve as the focal point of a room if the furniture and decor have more subdued patterns.

Color

Light colored rugs make a room look more spacious, while deeper colors lend coziness to a space.

Shape

Don’t be boxed in by the idea of getting a rectangular rug. A circular or octagonal-shaped area rug can add visual interest to your room.
