How to Choose Your Carpet

Nylon is the most durable and stain-resistant carpet fiber available. It is the fiber of choice for homes with pets and children, as well as people who frequently entertain. Nylon is perfect for heavily trafficked areas such as hallways and stairs.

Polyester is known for its luxurious look and feel. It also comes in a wide selection of colors and styles. Polyester is a good value for homes with normal traffic.

Olefin offers stain and moisture resistance, but it scores below nylon and polyester for wearability. While it can be a good choice in loop pile construction, olefin’s colors and styles are limited.

Favored for its natural beauty, wool has natural soil-resistant qualities but is not inherently stain-resistant. Wool looks good for a long time and is well constructed.

Triexta is a bio-based fiber from Dupont under the brand name Sorona^®. The production of Sorona fiber requires 30 percent less energy than nylon, and 37 percent of the material comes from renewable resources. Carpets made out of Sorona offer great durability, a very soft feel and excellent stain resistance. Triexta carpets are also made by Mohawk Industries under the brand name Smartstrand^®.

Twist refers to how tightly the fiber (carpet yarn) has been twisted. This is especially important in cut pile carpet because the tips are exposed and can become untwisted, giving the carpet a matted and worn appearance. The tighter the yarn is twisted, the better the carpet will stand up to crushing and matting.

Density refers to the amount of carpet fibers and and how tightly those fibers are packed together. The closer together the fibers are placed, the denser the carpet will be, and the better it will wear and perform.

Cut pile consists of yarns that are cut at the ends. The soft feel of cut pile carpet makes it a perfect choice for the most comfortable areas of your home – bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms. There are five basic styles of cut pile carpet and each style provides a different look and texture. These include velvet, saxony, frieze, shag and cable. The primary difference among these styles is the amount of twist in the yarns, which ultimately influences the carpet durability.

Loop pile carpeting consists of yarns that are looped and uncut on the surface. The pile height can vary, which changes both the appearance and feel. Loop pile carpet has excellent durability and strength, and it is ideal for heavily trafficked areas. Berber is a popular style of loop pile carpet that can be constructed as a level-loop or multi-loop carpet.

As the name suggests, this carpet has some cut piles and some that are not in order to create a different surface. Cut and loop pile carpets combine superior performance with luxurious comfort to add character and texture to your home.

Choosing the right cushion for your home

A firm, yet resilient cushion is necessary to form a good foundation under your carpet. Carpet cushion serves many purposes. It extends the life of your carpet, provides insulation and reduces noise. Most importantly, cushion makes your carpet more comfortable to walk on, which is why you probably chose carpet in the first place.

The furniture industry uses polyurethane foam in cushions and mattresses, and consequently, that generates scrap to be ground up and recycled into re-bond carpet cushion. Re-bond cushion typically comes in density levels between 4 and 8 pounds, with the heavier version being recommended to give your carpet the best wear and performance.

With ordinary carpet cushion, spills can soak through the carpet and remain in the cushion and subfloor where odors develop. This carpet cushion blocks moisture, so spills remain above the cushion where they can be completely removed. It also has Odor Guard technology, with enzymes that begin destroying odors immediately. If you are a pet owner, this is the ideal choice for your home.

Synthetic rubber was first developed during World War I as a substitute for reduced rubber supplies. It offers a very substantial feel that is superior compared to all other types of synthetic foams. Plus, its high density and low R-Value make it an ideal choice to use over radiant heated floors.
